| What is the possibility of aversive effects resulting from EMDR treatment?
The use of the EMDR treatment has stimulated a seizure response in a few individuals, most of whom already had a known medical history who had seizure problems. When using back and forth eye movements for bilateral stimulation, eyes and/or eye muscles may tire. EMDR may re-stimulate old emotions and memories associated with different life events and this could possibly cause psychologically harmful or uncomfortable memories difficult for client to handle. Also, EMDR is not recommended for people with known eye medical problems or dissociative disorders. |
